The Geographical Investigation (GI) component is often the most intimidating part of the O-Level, N-Level, and JC Geography papers. Unlike standard essay questions, GI requires you to step into the shoes of a researcher.
At Tuition Solution, we have been helping students ace their fieldwork components since 2014. If you are struggling with hypotheses, data collection, or evaluating your investigation, follow this 4-step framework to secure full marks.
The foundation of any GI is a clear, measurable Hypothesis.
The Secret: Ensure your hypothesis is “testable.” For example, “The temperature decreases as distance from the coast increases.”
Exam Tip: If a question asks you to “Refine” a hypothesis, make sure it is specific to the site you are studying.
Examiners love to see that you understand reliability and validity. When describing your methods (e.g., measuring infiltration rates or conducting a tourist survey), always mention:
Sampling Methods: Are you using Random, Systematic, or Stratified sampling? Be prepared to justify why.
Minimizing Bias: How did you ensure your data was objective? (e.g., using a digital thermometer instead of a liquid one for better precision).
You’ve collected the data—now you must show it. Choosing the wrong graph can cost you marks.
Line Graphs: Best for showing trends over time or distance (e.g., change in beach profile).
Scatter Graphs: Used for showing relationships between two variables (e.g., wind speed vs. wave frequency).
Pie Charts: Best for showing proportions (e.g., types of land use in an urban area).
This is usually the last part of the GI paper and the most difficult. To score the highest level, you must criticize your own work.
Identify Anomalies: Did one data point not fit the trend? Explain why (e.g., a sudden rainstorm during data collection).
Suggest Improvements: Don’t just say “take more readings.” Be specific: “Increase the number of sampling sites along the transect to get a more representative average of the river’s velocity.”
Geographical Investigation is difficult to master because it’s rarely practiced in school. Our tutors at Tuition Solution provide:
Mock GI Papers: Practice with real data sets from past-year exams.
Step-by-Step Guidance: We walk you through the entire research process, from hypothesis to conclusion.
Answering Templates: Exclusive templates that show you exactly how to phrase your data analysis to satisfy the marking rubrics.
Whether you are struggling with the theory of Plate Tectonics or the practical side of GI, Tuition Solution has the right specialist for you. Since 2014, we have remained Singapore’s top choice for 1-to-1 Geography coaching.
